Boosting police numbers to keep Gippsland safe

The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien says a plan to recruit 3,000 additional police officers will help restore community safety across Gippsland.
Mr O’Brien said the commitment from The Nationals in government would go a long way to address ongoing police shortages and rising crime in regional areas.
“Crime in regional areas is a growing problem and Gippsland is not immune.
“We are seeing it right across our local communities and people just aren’t feeling as safe as they use to and deserve to,” Mr O’Brien said.
“Too many police positions remain unfilled with stations operating with reduced hours and that puts extra pressure on our hardworking local officers.”
Under the plan, 3,000 additional police officers would be recruited, including experienced officers from overseas, alongside measures to fast-track recruitment and reopen stations that have closed or reduced hours.
Mr O’Brien said Gippsland will benefit directly from more boots on the ground.
“More police will mean faster response times, a stronger local presence and better outcomes for victims of crime.
“Our local police do an outstanding job, but they are stretched thin and need more support.”
Mr O’Brien said the plan will ensure regional communities are not left behind.
“Gippslanders deserve to feel safe at home, at work and out in the community.
“We need proper resourcing for police and a clear focus on community safety, and this plan delivers that.”
Mr O’Brien said regional communities have suffered under the Allan Labor Government and he will continue to advocate for greater support for frontline police in Gippsland.
“Regional communities like ours should not miss out when it comes to safety.
“Gippslanders deserve the same level of protection as anywhere else in the state.”
