O’Brien renews calls for Mirboo North stadium funding

The need to rebuild the Mirboo North stadium has once again been highlighted, with The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien calling on the Allan Labor Government to provide funding for the important community project.
Mr O’Brien has again written to the Minister Education, highlighting that Mirboo North Secondary College has been sharing the stadium with the primary school and the wider community for years.
“The stadium is used by local sports and community groups, including basketball, football, badminton and yoga, but it is outdated and no longer fit-for-purpose,” Mr O’Brien said.
“I have been working closely with the school and the wider Mirboo North community for many years, listening to their concerns about the stadium.
“Together we even produced a petition to demonstrate the strong local support for a rebuild, but despite this, funding has still not been provided.
“We need the Education Department to back this project, help us design a new facility and provide the funding to build it.”
The renewed call for funding comes as the Labor Government announced a pilot program in Melbourne’s west to open school facilities, including gyms and sporting fields, to community use with a $1.4 million investment.
“Regional communities like Mirboo North do not have the same access to facilities as Melbourne suburbs.
“This stadium is used heavily by both the schools and community groups, and it no longer meets current competition standards.
“While opening new schools in Melbourne’s west for community use is positive, Mirboo North has been waiting for funding for over ten years.
“I am again calling on the Allan Labor Government to support this project and ensure the community has a safe, functional facility.”
