O’Brien calls for Royal Commission into billions lost to corruption

The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien MP, is calling on Gippslanders to back a petition demanding a Royal Commission into billions of taxpayer dollars lost to corruption on Victorian Big Build projects.

Mr O’Brien said an estimated $15 billion of public funds had been lost, money that could be delivering vital infrastructure and services for regional communities like Gippsland.

“Victorians deserve to know how this has happened, who is responsible, and how we can recover these funds,” Mr O’Brien said.

“That’s why I will be tabling a petition in Parliament calling for a Royal Commission into corruption on Big Build sites and to pursue the recovery of taxpayer money.”

Mr O’Brien said The Nationals and Liberals will hold a Royal Commission if elected in November, as well as ban criminals from government building sites, give IBAC new follow the dollar powers to hold those responsible accountable and introduce Construction Enforcement Victoria as a tough watchdog on building sites.

He said the scale of the losses was particularly frustrating given the number of important projects in Gippsland still waiting for funding.

“Imagine what even a fraction of that $15 billion could do for Gippsland.

“It could deliver a consolidated campus for Sale College, improved sporting infrastructure in Mirboo North, safer and more efficient roads in and around Traralgon and modern fire stations for our local CFA crews.”

Mr O’Brien said Gippsland residents were right to feel short-changed.

“Gippslanders work hard, pay our taxes and deserve their fair share of investment.

“Instead, we’re seeing money disappear into cost blowouts and allegations of corruption on city projects while regional Victoria is left behind.”

The petition calls on the Victorian Parliament to establish a Royal Commission to fully investigate the losses and implement measures to recover funds wherever possible.

Mr O’Brien is encouraging all Gippsland residents to support the push for accountability.

“This is about standing up for Gippsland and making sure every taxpayer dollar is spent where it should be which is on delivering the infrastructure and services our communities need.

“I urge everyone to add their name to the petition and send a clear message that enough is enough.”

Those wishing to sign the petition can do so online at www.dannyobrienmp.com.au/issue/recover-taxpayer-funds or in person at the Mr O’Brien’s office located at 54 Cunninghame St, Sale.
