Local voices call for action on ‘Kamikaze Corner’

The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien has taken the voice of South Gippsland locals to Parliament backing their call to fix the notorious South Gippsland Highway intersection in the middle of Leongatha.

Mr O’Brien is campaigning for the State Government to deliver planning and capital funding for the Leongatha Heavy Vehicle Alternative Route stage two.

He has now tabled a second petition calling for the funding in the Legislative Assembly, saying the works are crucial in order to fix the disastrous intersection that resulted from stage one.

“The South Gippsland Highway intersection at McCartin, Roughead, Anderson, Long and Hughes Streets is in urgent need of attention,” Mr O’Brien said.

“‘Kamikaze Corner’, as it is known by locals is a debacle that is only being further complicated by the Great Southern Rail Trail extension through Leongatha.

“The South Gippsland Shire has listed the project as one of its priorities for advocacy and we now need to convince the Andrews Labor Government to get on board.

Mr O’Brien said he intended to continue to highlight the importance of this project to ensure that necessary government planning and funding is put towards delivering a solution.

“I have tabled two petitions calling for this urgent work so far this year and will continue to collect signatures so that I can take this important message to Parliament to ensure our local voices are heard.

“I also took the opportunity to show this problematic intersection to the Leader of The Nationals, Peter Walsh during a recent visit to the area.

“I will continue campaigning with the people of South Gippsland until we fix this issue.”
