Students and families across Leongatha continue to pay the price for the Allan Labor’s Government mismanagement as it is revealed a promised local school upgrade has stalled.
On Thursday, 27th of October 2022 the Labor Member for Eastern Victoria Region, visited Leongatha Secondary College and announced an election commitment to provide funding of $11.7 million to the College if re-elected.
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien said it was disappointing that this project remains unfunded and in the “planning” phase three years on.
“Leongatha Secondary College is one of 29 Victorian schools that have not received any funding for its upgrade project despite receiving a 2022 election commitment from Labor,” Mr O’Brien said.
“Not only is there no money on the table, but there isn’t even a commencement date scheduled.
“I know the school is still hoping to move forward with this project.
“The Allan Labor Government must ensure it keeps its promise and provides funds in this year’s budget as a matter of priority.”
These delays come as Labor’s net debt is set to reach $187.3 billion by mid-2028 and casts serious doubt on the Allan Labor Government’s ability to deliver on a project that was originally promised to commence in 2024.
Mr O’Brien said it is all but certain Labor has broken its promise to the Leongatha community to deliver an upgraded local school by November 206.
“I am aware the College has been given funding through the 2024-25 round of the Capital Works Fund to refurbish the school’s student toilets and change rooms.
“This appears to be a small peace offering from a Labor State Government that cannot deliver on its original $11.7 million promise.
“Labor cannot manage money, cannot manage school projects and Leongatha students are paying the price.”
