The long-awaited redevelopment of the former Sale police station site has taken an important step forward, with the Allan Labor Government indicating it is working towards a sale of the land this year.
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien, said the update from the Minister for Finance was a positive sign of progress after more than a decade of uncertainty and the recent fire which destroyed the old station.
“After 11 years of the site sitting idle, it is encouraging to finally see a clear intention and timeframe from the Government,” Mr O’Brien said.
“The Minister has confirmed the Department of Transport and Planning is working with the Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation regarding Traditional Owner interests, with the aim of releasing the land for sale in 2026.
“That is a positive step forward and it’s important this process continues to progress constructively and without further unnecessary delay.”
Mr O’Brien said recent events had highlighted the urgency of action.
“Following the fire that destroyed the old station we need to get on with things. The community has been very patient and there is a strong desire to see this prominent site put to good use.”
Mr O’Brien said the location presented a valuable opportunity for Sale and the wider region.
“This is a prime site near Lake Guthridge and the CBD and it has the potential to support a development that brings jobs, investment and activity to the town.
“It is exactly the kind of project that can help drive local economic growth.”
Mr O’Brien said he would continue to work with the State Government to ensure the proposed timeline is met.
“After so many years of delay, it’s important we now see this commitment translated into real progress on the ground.
“The community deserves to see this site finally turned into something positive for Sale.”
