The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien, is encouraging local organisations and community groups to apply for funding through the Victorian Government’s Community Food Relief Program as latest data shows many families are struggling to keep food on the table.
Mr O’Brien said the program offers vital support for local food relief programs that many of our most vulnerable Gippslanders rely on.
“I know the cost of living continues to bite and food insecurity is a real concern in many homes,” Mr O’Brien said.
“These grants are an opportunity for local neighbourhood houses, volunteer-led organisations, Aboriginal entities, councils, and other community groups to strengthen their food relief programs and continue supporting the people who need it most.”
Mr O’Brien said the growing demand for food relief services highlights the importance of this funding.
According to the Foodbank Hunger Report 2024, 48% of low-income households are experiencing food insecurity and 26 per cent of those are accessing formal food relief regularly, a 12 per cent increase on the previous year.
“This report shows that people are having to cut back on protein and dairy products as well as personal care products because they simply cannot keep up with rising costs.
“It is clear that our local food relief programs are more important than ever, and I am very grateful to those that take the time and make the effort to keep these programs running.”
Mr O’Brien is urging eligible groups across Gippsland South to apply before the closing date of 4:00pm on Tuesday 19 August 2025.
“Whether you’re a local community group running a food pantry, a volunteer kitchen providing hot meals, or a neighbourhood house distributing groceries, I encourage you to explore this funding opportunity.
“As always, I am more than happy to provide a letter of support and can be contacted on 5144 1987 or via email at danny.obrien@parliament.vic.gov.au.”
