The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien has thanked volunteers, councils and community groups for delivering a strong program of Australia Day events right across the electorate.
Mr O’Brien spent Australia Day attending several local events, starting the morning at a citizenship ceremony in Leongatha, where South Gippsland Shire Council welcomed its newest Australian citizens.
He then attended a second citizenship ceremony in Sale, where Wellington Shire Council formally welcomed more new Australians to the local community.
“Citizenship ceremonies are always a highlight of Australia Day,” Mr O’Brien said.
“It is a privilege to see people from all walks of life make the commitment to become Australian citizens and to welcome them into our local communities here in Gippsland South.”
Mr O’Brien later attended a community celebration in Welshpool before heading to Foster for the Australia Day Awards ceremony.
“Australia Day is an important opportunity for communities to come together, reflect on what it means to be Australian and recognise the people who go above and beyond for others,” he said.
“I want to thank the many volunteers, councils and community groups who put in the time and effort to organise events across Gippsland South.
“These events don’t happen without a lot of hard work behind the scenes.”
Mr O’Brien also congratulated local award recipients recognised through Australia Day honours and citizen awards.
“The Australia Day awards are a reminder of the incredible calibre of people we have living in Gippsland South and the quiet contribution so many locals make to their communities.
“Gippsland is a great place to live and Australia Day is a chance to celebrate the people who make it so.”
