Concerns over online-only rego rebate

The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien has raised concerns that the Allan Labor Government’s new vehicle registration rebate could create major problems for vulnerable residents because applications must be made online.
Mr O’Brien said while applications are due to open later this week, there is still very little information available about the scheme. However, the Service Victoria website states that applications must be made through the Service Victoria app or website.
“We’ve already seen with programs like the Power Saving Bonus that online-only systems can be very difficult for many people,” Mr O’Brien said.
“Not everyone is comfortable using apps or websites and some people simply don’t have access to reliable internet, a smartphone or a computer.
“A lot of older residents are worried about making mistakes online or entering personal information into systems they are unfamiliar with.”
Mr O’Brien said he was also concerned scammers would take advantage of confusion around the rebate.
“Whenever governments roll out these online-only programs, scammers are quick to move in with fake emails, text messages and websites.
“I want to remind people not to click on links from unverified senders and never provide banking or personal details unless you are certain the message is legitimate.
“Scammers are becoming more sophisticated and many fake messages can look very convincing.”
Mr O’Brien said residents should only use official Service Victoria channels and seek help if they are unsure.
“The Allan Labor Government needs to understand that these online-only systems don’t work for everyone, especially in regional areas.
“There should be paper forms or in-person support available for people who are not confident using technology.
“Nobody should miss out on support simply because they struggle with online systems.”
Mr O’Brien said his electorate office will be available to assist local residents who may need help navigating the process.
