Gippsland family violence rates remain among state’s highest

The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien, says new figures highlighting the scale of family and gender-based violence across Gippsland are a sobering reminder of the challenges facing the region during the 16 Days of Activism campaign.
The global campaign, running from 25 November to 10 December, spans from the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women through to International Human Rights Day.
“Unfortunately, family violence remains an ongoing and deeply troubling issue for many Gippslanders,” Mr O’Brien said.
“It is shameful that our region has continued to record some of the highest rates in the state year after year.”
East Gippsland and Latrobe local government areas are currently ranked first and second in the state for family violence incidents per 100,000 residents, with Wellington not far behind in sixth following a 13.04 per cent increase over the last 12 months.
Mr O’Brien said the statistics should give the entire community pause.
“This level of harm in our own towns and neighbourhoods is distressing, and it is appalling that so many local families are living with this reality.”
“The 16-day campaign is a timely reminder that everyone, in every part of the community, has a role in fostering respect and safety.
“Violence of any kind, against anyone, is unacceptable.
“We can all help create a safer community by modelling respectful behaviour, increasing awareness and by looking out for one another.”
