Labor out of touch with volunteers over online rebate system

The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien has called on the Allan Labor Government to fix problems with the Emergency Services and Volunteers Fund rebate system for CFA and SES volunteers.
Speaking in Parliament, Mr O’Brien said many dedicated local volunteers have struggled to access the rebate because the process is online only, with some missing out altogether.
“In Parliament I highlighted that many of our volunteers are of advancing age or of a more practical, hands-on background and the online system just isn’t conducive to them being able to apply,” Mr O’Brien said.
“We’ve had cases where volunteers were given the wrong password, couldn’t get help from the helpline or missed out entirely because their property is in a partner’s name.”
Mr O’Brien said the government’s insistence on online-only systems is yet another example of how out of touch it is with the people it claims to represent.
“Not everyone can access or perhaps even afford a reliable internet connection or even owns a computer.
“The government boasts that volunteers don’t pay this tax, but many are having too because they can’t qualify or apply for the rebate.
“This won’t be an issue under The Nationals and Liberals in Government because we will scrap this tax.”
Mr O’Brien said similar problems have been seen with programs like the Power Saving Bonus, which have placed extra pressure on already stretched and underfunded Neighbourhood Houses.
“Neighbourhood Houses are spending hours helping volunteers and pensioners navigate these online systems.
“The government could fix this by offering a paper-based option for those who aren’t computer literate.”
Mr O’Brien said the situation is not only causing stress and frustration but also leaving long-serving volunteers feeling disheartened and undervalued.
“Our CFA and SES volunteers give so much to protect our communities.
“The least the Allan Labor Government can do is make it easier for them to access the support they’re entitled to, not put up more barriers.”
