The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien, says local drivers won’t be fooled by yet another Allan Labor Government announcement of a so-called “Better Roads Blitz”.
Mr O’Brien said Gippslanders know all too well that road conditions are getting worse under Labor, not better.
“Labor has been rolling out these media campaigns promoting ‘blitzes’ every year, but anyone driving our local highways can see the neglect for themselves,” Mr O’Brien said.
“We’ve heard the same promises every year for almost a decade and yet our local roads are still crumbling.
“Gippslanders are left dodging potholes and damaging their vehicles while Labor puts out another recycled press release.”
Mr O’Brien, who is also the Shadow Minister for Roads and Road Safety, said figures from the independent Parliamentary Budget Office show Victoria is spending $1,500 less per kilometre on road maintenance than the national average.
“It’s no wonder our roads are in such a parlous state. Our roads need maintenance, not more spin.”
Mr O’Brien said the South Gippsland Highway between Leongatha and Korumburra is just one example of a road locals are fed up with.
“This section has been subject to long-term speed reductions and hazard warnings for years.
“Labor can’t manage roads and Gippsland road-users are paying the price every day.”
