The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien is encouraging locals to have their say on proposed renewable energy infrastructure in the Gippsland region.
VicGrid has released a draft 2025 Victorian Transmission Plan which is currently available for viewing and feedback online at engage.vic.gov.au.
Mr O’Brien said the draft plan identifies seven proposed renewable energy zones (REZ) including Central and North Gippsland between Morwell and Sale.
“While I am pleased to see that the Allan Labor Government has abandoned the ridiculous notion of a renewable energy zone in the South Gippsland hills, I remain concerned for the potential negative impacts this plan may have on Gippsland landholders.
“We have seen the community angst generated by onshore windfarms like Bald Hills and proposed facilities at Delburn and Alberton.
“This plan identifies the potential of such windfarms to be developed in the Gippsland REZ between Morwell and Sale.
“I urge landholders in these areas to ensure they voice any concerns and get involved in this consultation.”
Mr O’Brien said he also held concerns for the potential of more transmission lines in the Gippsland Shoreline REZ.
“This plan also indicates that we may see more transmission lines for the Woodside-Giffard area and that is something locals are already concerned about.
“It is crucial that landholders get involved now at this consultation stage to prevent the Allan Labor Government from forging ahead with potentially damaging projects.”
Mr O’Brien said he will continue to seek assurances that Gippslanders will reap actual benefits from any proposed renewable projects in the area.
“I am not opposed to renewable energy projects – I just want to ensure the views of rural communities are heard and respected.
“The Nationals have already committed to overturning Labor’s ban on residents appealing to VCAT against renewable projects and transmission lines.”
Consultation on the draft 2025 Victorian Transmission Plan closes 24 June 2025.
