The Nationals Public Transport Meeniyan Buses VLine bus stop bus

Time for action on Meeniyan bus stop

The State Government must take action on a potentially dangerous and frustrating situation involving V/Line buses in Meeniyan.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien has called on the government to get involved in relocating the existing Meeniyan eastbound bus stop, which is currently sited in an unsuitable location.

Mr O'Brien has been contacted by Meeniyan Tourism and Traders Association, Meeniyan Progress Association and even local police seeking support for the relocation.

"Currently the eastbound V/Line bus stop is located directly outside the Meeniyan IGA and therefore inter-mingled with local parking for shoppers," Mr O'Brien said.

"With the recent opening of the fantastic new Pandesal Bakery this location has only become busier and there is frustration from local traders and bus drivers that there is not enough space for the bus stop and people often illegally park in the stop itself."

Mr O'Brien said various agencies had been working on the issue for over 12 months and it was generally agreed to relocate the bus stop to an area opposite the existing westbound stop just before Tompkins Road and in front of Tandarra Park.

"This seems like a straight-forward and good solution as it will get the coach out of the main street, while still being close enough for passengers to access the CBD and other parts of town.

"There is genuine concern that with the bus trying to drop off directly outside a busy part of town, there will be an accident as passengers get on and off the bus and navigate around parking cars.

"There's also lots of frustration I believe, from the coach drivers who regularly have to double park because someone has illegally parked in the bus stop.

"I've now written to the Public Transport Minister, Melissa Horne asking her to intervene because we are now at an impasse.

"It's been well over 12 months since I first had this matter brought to my attention at which time various agencies were planning a solution.

It's time now the government provided the funding necessary to relocate the bus stop and alleviate this problem."
