Statement on the passing of Kevin Hogan

We throw the word “legend” around too easily, but no-one could argue when it comes to Kevin Hogan, a giant of the Gippsland sporting community and his home town of Sale.

If you lived in Sale or followed sport in Gippsland, local media or the Swans, “Hoges” has always been special, particularly at Sale Football Netball Club.

Over 50 years on ABC Gippsland (I can still hear the station call in his voice “You’re listening to 3GI and 3MT…”) and ever present with his photos and sports reports in the Gippsland Times, Hoges was a fixture at the Sale Oval and anywhere else sport was being played. In later years you’d most likely find him at the netball court, but for me the landing at the front of the Sale Oval grandstand where he took so many sports photos, will always be Hoges’ spot.

One of nature’s gentlemen, he always had a kind word of encouragement and advice for young journalists starting out, myself included.

I fondly remember as a young cadet journalist at the Gippsland Times chatting all things sport with Hoges on Sunday shifts when he’d drop in his photos and Saturday sport report.

A great family man and community member, we are all the poorer for his passing. My condolences to all the Hogan family.

Vale, the great Kevin Hogan.

Together we can make a difference
