South Gippy Highway Coal Creek bends must feature in budget
The state government has been called on to provide funding for the next important upgrade of the South Gippsland Highway – realignment of the Coal Creek bends at Korumburra.
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien said the re-alignment of the road at Coal Creek was an important project to improve safety on the South Gippsland Highway and should be funded in the October state budget.
“I’m conscious that everyone is focused on COVID-19 at the moment but we also have to ensure that planning is underway for recovery and this is an important project for the region and for road safety.
“The Andrews Labor Government has previously provided funding for planning works which have now progressed significantly and it’s time the Government provided the actual funding to get things done.
“I am conscious that it was 2016 that funding was announced for re-alignment of the Black Spur further down the Highway and yet it’s only been in the last few months that construction has actually begun.
“That’s why I am urging the Government to provide the necessary funding to finalise plans and then progress construction of the re-alignment.”
Mr O’Brien said South Gippslanders have been putting up with an extended 60km/hr speed limit at the bends since 2017 and it’s time to get the road fixed.
“There have been 17 reported crashes along this section of the Highway since 2014 and sadly two people have lost their lives and another five were seriously injured.
“The Government has been consulting the community and it should finalise discussions with the Korumburra community and road safety fraternity to ensure the best, most workable option for the town and local residents.
“I urge the Government and Regional Roads Victoria to re-align this section with a view to the longer-term duplication of the highway, while improving safety in the short term.”
