Paper is nice, graders and asphalt are better
Local Nationals MPs are calling for immediate action to complete the duplication of the Princes Highway to Sale, after it was announced contracts have finally been signed.
Federal Member for Gippsland, Darren Chester and State Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien, said getting contracts signed nine months after State Government funding was finally confirmed, was no great cause for celebration.
“This project has been languishing because of the Andrews Labor Government’s failure for three years to match the Commonwealth funds to get it finished,” Mr Chester said.
“For the State Labor Government to take so long to now get builders engaged is immensely frustrating for the local community which has waited so long and is simply not good enough.
“What we want to see is equipment on the road, breaking ground and getting the project happening.”
Mr O’Brien said the delays were unjustified.
“The duplication of the 50 km between Traralgon and Sale has been underway for more than a decade now. When the funding for the last two stages was finally confirmed last July, the Major Roads Project Victoria website stated that ‘pre-construction activities were already complete’. So why has it taken so long to get the project to tender?
“Signatures on contracts are nice, but we need to see graders moving to deliver a safer, better road which will deliver better freight efficiency for our region and help make us a more attractive place to live, work and invest.”
Mr Chester and Mr O’Brien called on the State Government to announce when actual works will get underway.
