O’Brien urges Labor to support Grand Strzelecki Track

The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien, has called on the Labor State Government to back tourism in Gippsland by supporting the Grand Strzelecki Track.

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, Mr O’Brien urged the Labor Government to gift the site and building of the former Balook Primary School to the Grand Strzelecki Track committee to provide accommodation and camping.

“The former Balook school buildings and site are immediately adjacent to Tarra-Bulga National Park and right beside the Grand Strzelecki Track.

“I’ve asked the Minister for Education to consider gifting the site to the Track committee which would be an added attraction for the track and help boost and local tourism,” Mr O’Brien said.

“There is also the possibility of the building being used by the Balook and District Residents Association (BADRA).”

The Grand Strzelecki Track was launched a few years ago with support from the then Coalition Government.

“The track takes in some breath-taking scenery in the Strzelecki Ranges around the Tarra-Bulga National Park and is a wonderful tourism asset for all of Gippsland.

“While the committee would ideally like funding support from the Labor Government, a gift of the site and buildings would be a great start.”

Mr O’Brien said the committee is also in need of new helpers and encouraged local residents to get involved.
