O’Brien seeks to put Leongatha bypass fix on agenda

The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien has called on the Andrews Labor Government to progress funding for projects on the South Gippsland Highway, including stage two of the Leongatha Heavy Vehicle Bypass.

Speaking in State Parliament this week, Mr O’Brien called on the Government to provide funding for planning and ultimately construction of stage two of the bypass, the Coal Creek bends realignment at Korumburra and the Grassy Spur realignment between Stony Creek and Foster.

Mr O’Brien said with works almost complete on the Bair Street redevelopment following stage one of the bypass, it was time to fix Leongatha’s main arterials.

“While we’ve got the majority of trucks out of Bair Street, we are left with an intersection on the South Gippsland Highway with the Strzelecki Highway that is a dangerous and congested mess.

“I regularly receive complaints about this intersection and they are growing louder as years go by.

“With more people moving to the country we need to fix our main roads including the South Gippsland Highway and we need VicRoads and the State Government to be progressing the planning of stage two in Leongatha.

“My understanding is this will involve taking the Highway out along Hughes Street and there is the opportunity to make this a more significant bypass without the difficult turn and intersections that are currently experienced around McCartin, Roughead and Long Streets.”

Mr O’Brien said Coal Creek bends planning was further advanced and it is time funding was approved for these works.

“We’ve seen a number of fatalities around the Coal Creek bends in recent years and this is a priority for the region. Likewise, works to improve the Grassy Spur bends east of Stony Creek have been on the agenda for a long time but little has been done.

“I want to see our roads better and safer, but I also want to see our main towns more motorist friendly and I urge the Government to provide funding in the budget coming up in a few weeks’ time.”
