O’Brien follows up on storm outcomes

The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien has meet with local residents at Binginwarri and Mount Best as part of ongoing follow up to last month’s massive storm damage and power outages throughout the region.

Mr O’Brien said it was important that local constituents had the opportunity to provide feedback on both the storm clean-up and the impact of the power outages, which lasted as long as two weeks for some people.

“It was good to catch up with people now that things have settled down and hear what some of the experiences were.

“Most people understood this was an unprecedented event and could deal with being off power for a few days but for those without power for around two weeks, particularly around the Strzelecki’s, being offline for so long really stretched the friendship.

“I’ve called on the State Government to conduct a review of the circumstances around the outages to see if we can learn anything and improve the situation in future.

“I’ve also asked the State Government to place a moratorium on the ban on collecting firewood from roadsides where it is safe to do so given the amount of timber that will become a fire risk in future if not dealt with.”

Mr O’Brien also spent some time traveling local roads to see firsthand the extent of damage.

“I spent about three days after the storm and floods to see what had happened and now I’ve gone to some other areas for a further look and to meet with residents to see what they are dealing with firsthand.

“I am aware we have landslips in a number of places such as McCartins Road at Turtons Creek and I’ve been working with the Shire and State Government to ensure we get these landslips dealt with as quickly as possible.

“In the past, delays have been excessive and I’ve spoken to the Acting Emergency Services Minister to ensure there are no hold-ups from a state level to getting landslips fixed and roads re-opened.”
