O’Brien calls for power outage review
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South Danny O’Brien has asked the State Government to undertake a review of power outages following the recent storm.
Speaking in State Parliament Mr O’Brien said it was appropriate that there be a review of the current regulatory framework in Victoria to ensure electricity users are continuing to get the best service possible.
“I am very conscious that the storm was an enormous event and put unprecedented strain on the network and AusNet Services and its ability to repair and reconnect hundreds of thousands of customers across the state,” Mr O’Brien said.
“However, there is never a circumstance that we can’t learn from and it may be that things could have been done better.
“I know most of my constituents were unhappy but prepared to be without power for a few days but for those that suffered an outage for more than a week, it became a serious financial, mental and social strain.
“I’m not suggesting anyone did anything wrong, but I think we can always do better.”
Mr O’Brien said distribution companies such as AusNet Services have conditions on the licenses granted to them by the State Government and this should form part of any review.
“It’s been a phenomenal effort from AusNet to get people back on but telling a resident that they are one of 40,000 still cut off is not much comfort.
“I am very conscious that any additional conditions or restrictions placed on a power company’s license could only end up costing people more on their power bills and that’s the last thing we need.
“However, I’ve asked the Minister to review the license conditions and framework to ensure that we have the best balance between affordable power bills and a reliable power supply even in the event of natural disasters.”
