Nats Leader backs highway campaign
The Leader of the Nationals, Peter Walsh has backed the completion of the final two stages of the duplication of the Princes Highway between Traralgon and Sale.
Mr Walsh inspected the remaining unfinished sections of the duplication with The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien, and Member for Eastern Victoria Region, Melina Bath, as he travelled through Gippsland today.
The Highway duplication is one of several state-wide infrastructure projects put forward by the Liberal-Nationals as part of their Back to Work and Back in Business plan to stimulate local economies after the COVID-19 crisis.
“This is just the sort of project we need. It’s a significant local project that is relatively affordable for the state, will create local jobs and can be started very quickly,” Mr Walsh said.
“My colleague Danny O’Brien has been fighting hard for this and we made commitments at the 2018 election.
“It is very disappointing that the Andrews Labor Government has sat on its hands for so long. It should now get this project underway.”
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien welcomed the support of Mr Walsh and the Liberal-Nationals team and again called on the Andrews Labor
Government to put up its funding.
“We have $132 million on the table from the Commonwealth thanks to Darren Chester, and Daniel Andrews and Jacinta Andrews have dithered on this project for too long.
“Finishing the duplication would bring enormous benefits for Central and East Gippsland, improving travel times, boosting road safety and making our region a more attractive place to live and invest.
“This is a no-brainer and with the government looking to stimulate the local economy with massive amounts of borrowing this is a project that should be high on its list.”
