Marinus Link: still a long way to go
South Gippsland land-owners have been reassured there is still a long process ahead before the proposed Marinus Link underground electricity cable from Tasmania can proceed.
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien has sought and received technical advice on the project from the State Government, confirming that Marinus Link does not yet have compulsory easement acquisition rights. He said the advice also indicated a number of planning and approvals processes remained ahead from a State Government perspective.
“I appreciate that many land owners were taken aback when they received advice from TasNetworks, the government-owned electricity distributor in Tasmania that is proposing this second Bass Strait crossing. However, it’s important to note that it’s still very early days in the process and no final decisions have been made.
“I asked the Minister for Energy here in Victoria for some advice late last year and have now received that advice which confirms that Marinus Link does not currently have a transmission licence in Victoria, which precludes it from compulsorily acquiring an easement across the properties of South Gippsland land owners.
“Marinus Link has indicated it will be seeking such a licence. However, in addition, there will be a significant planning and environmental effects process well before any approvals are given.
“On top of all that, TasNetworks is still some way off a decision itself as to whether Marinus Link proceeds.”
Mr O’Brien said he was continuing to encourage land owners to engage with Marinus Link.
“I know there is some uncertainty, but I encourage my constituents to engage with the company and take up its offer of paying for independent legal advice.
“I know some were concerned that they were presented with a done deal but it is clear there is still a long way to go and a significant amount of approvals needed before Marinus Link can proceed.
“If anyone needs assistance on this issue, I am very happy to talk to them and help them work through the issues.”
