Agnes Falls Tourism Funding local tourism The Nationals Danny O'Brien Short changing Grant South Gippsland Shire economy

Labor passes the buck on Agnes Falls

The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien says the Andrews Labor Government is short-changing South Gippsland by its failure to fund the construction of a cantilevered viewing platform at Agnes Falls in South Gippsland.

Speaking in Parliament last November, Mr O’Brien formally called on the Government to fund the project after it boasted of a $474 million spend on the environment and Victoria’s parks and reserves.

Mr O’Brien said he had now received a written response from the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change that simply stated:

“The South Gippsland Shire Council made the decision to not progress this project.”

“Agnes Falls is a Crown asset and any viewing platform constructed would be a Parks Victoria-owned asset. Parks Victoria has already approved the platform, but won’t fund its construction,” Mr O’Brien said.

“The audacity to try and blame the failure to cough-up just $700,000 from a pool of $474 million for this highly-valued project on local government beggar’s belief.

“Anyone who has been to Agnes Falls will know it is already a great tourism attraction.

“The geography of the place though, makes it difficult to see the full splendour of the falls and the cantilevered viewing platform out into the gorge would be a spectacular attraction for our region.

“This is a great project that will go a long way to support this area and will ultimately help bolster the tourism offerings in South Gippsland.”

Mr O’Brien said after the devastating year Gippsland has had, this project would boost the economy during construction and then by increasing tourism numbers to the area.

“What we need is a State Government that takes leadership and seizes opportunities to increase tourism and boost our local economy, not pass the buck.

“There is no excuse for failing to fund this project and I’m disappointed in the complete lack of leadership being demonstrated.

“I will continue to advocate for funding for this project that will provide great outcomes for our community once achieved.”

The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien MP is again calling on the Andrews Labor Government to fund the development of a cantilevered viewing platform at Agnes Falls.
