The Nationals Gippsland South Danny O'Brien CFA Funding economy stimulus post-covid19 covid-19 recovery Princes Highway Highway Duplication Regional Victoria
Gippsland projects should be on infrastructure list
A number of Gippsland infrastructure projects should be high on the list of the state government’s plans to stimulate local economies.
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien has been campaigning to ensure that Gippsland and regional Victoria doesn’t miss out on any post-Covid-19 stimulus program.
“There are a number of projects that I have been campaigning for, for a number of years, that fit neatly into the State Government’s $2.7 billion announcement to create jobs and stimulate local economies,” Mr O’Brien said.
“The Princes Highway duplication between Traralgon and Sale is number one, and would be an obvious candidate for the government to fund.
“The final two stages of the duplication are ready to go and there is federal money already on the table thanks to my federal colleague, Darren Chester. It just needs the state government to commit its share and work could be started within months once a tender is let.”
Mr O’Brien said he noticed the announcement also included funding for new CFA and SES stations.
“The Andrews Labor Government has turned it back on Gippsland fire brigades and CFA volunteers over the last few years and failed to fund the urgently needed station upgrades at Mirboo North, Foster and Yarram, as well as some smaller country brigades such as Winnindoo.
“These stations would be highly suitable for this funding, would deliver a local construction dividend for Gippsland and most importantly would much better serve the needs of our CFA volunteers.”
Mr O’Brien said with tourism projects also listed as part of the package, funding should be found for the proposed viewing platform at Agnes Falls.
Mr O’Brien said there were plenty of other projects that could have money spent on them in Gippsland including improvements to the South Gippsland, Strzelecki and Hyland highways and funding for the final stage of the Macalister Irrigation District 2030 modernisation.
