Dedicated Gippsland line needed for South Gippsland rail

A dedicated rail line for Gippsland would bring South Gippsland a step closer to the return of train services, The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien said today.

Mr O’Brien has welcomed the commitment by Leader of The Nationals, Peter Walsh to a dedicated Gippsland rail line.

Speaking at The Nationals State Conference in Shepparton at the weekend Mr Walsh said a dedicated line was needed and was something The Nationals were working towards.

“I’ve been working on this issue for some time because Gippsland rail travellers know that congestion in the south eastern suburbs is what causes our biggest delays on the Gippsland line,” Mr O’Brien said.

“I am also conscious of community interest in returning rail to Leongatha as well. I think that will be viable again in the medium term but it cannot proceed at all unless there are more slots available on the Cranbourne-Pakenham line to accommodate a South Gippsland train.  A dedicated line would deliver that.

“With rapid growth continuing throughout the south-eastern suburbs of Cranbourne and Clyde, and the prospect of a new commercial airport near Koo Wee Rup, we must plan for the future.

“More and more people are relying on public transport and some parts of my electorate such as Nyora, Poowong, Loch and even Korumburra are becoming an extended part of the commuter belt.”

Mr O’Brien said while he had been calling on Labor to undertake work on the Gippsland line he’d also been working with his Gippsland colleagues and the Shadow Cabinet on the project.

“It was very gratifying that Peter Walsh has listened to our concerns and has highlighted the need for action on the dedicated line and indicated that The Nationals in government will deliver it.

“I look forward to additional announcements prior to the election that will put meat on the bones and ensure a better service for Gippsland passengers.”
