Community campaign results in new Yarram school

The Nationals Member for Gippsland South Danny O’Brien has congratulated the Yarram community on a campaign that has delivered $4 million from the State Budget to rebuild the Yarram Primary School.

Mr O’Brien said the school community and wider Yarram population had worked tirelessly to ensure that their fight for a new school was front and centre of State Budget deliberations.

“This is a great outcome for Yarram and I am proud to have been part of this campaign,” Mr O’Brien said.

“Since I was elected, I have been working in conjunction with the community to ensure that the teachers and students at Yarram primary have a modern environment in which to deliver the best education possible.”

“Earlier this year I launched a petition calling on the State Government to fund the rebuild and I was pleased last sitting week to table it in Parliament with the signatures of more than 900 local residents - from a town of 2,000 people. This clearly highlighted the strong desire of the community to have a new school that meets current needs.

“Congratulations to school council president Julie Travers and her team, the Rebuild Yarram Primary campaign headed by Marian Macdonald and Principal Penny Earle and all the staff for their efforts and their patience.

“The $4 million of funding will allow for a new school to be built that will cater for students from Yarram and surrounding areas now and into the future.”

Mr O’Brien said an allocation of planning money from the former Liberal-Nationals Government’s final budget had ensured the project was shovel-ready.

“Funding from The Nationals in Government has enabled the school to work through a planning process, including the preparation of final designs, to ensure that this new facility meets all of the needs of the current curriculum and student population,” Mr O’Brien said.

“Students, teachers and parents at Yarram have been waiting too long a new school, so it’s fantastic to see today that their hard work campaigning for a new school has not been in vain.”
