Calling all prospective councillors
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien is reminding civic-minded South Gippsland residents that nominations for South Gippsland Shire elections open next month.
Mr O’Brien said the 23rd October election day was rapidly approaching, with nominations opening on the 16th September and closing on the 21st September.
“We are all looking forward to getting back to elected local councillors, but we also want to ensure that we have the best people for the job.
“If you or someone you know is considering putting your hand up for council then it’s important to be aware of the timelines and the rules surrounding it.
“I’m encouraging anyone who is a community-minded person with the interests of the South Gippsland Shire and its residents at heart to consider putting their hands up.”
Mr O’Brien said it was important to be aware that the Victorian Government provides compulsory candidate training which can be accessed here – https://www.localgovernment.vic.gov.au/council-governance/candidate-training.
The South Gippsland Shire is also providing further information to candidates via its website here – www.southgippsland.vic.gov.au/election.
“We were all disappointed to see the behaviour of the previous council which ultimately led to its dismissal, but I’m optimistic we will have a clean slate and a fresh start with new councillors who will work together and simply get on with the job in the best interests of the local community.
“I’m more than happy to speak to anyone who wants advice about public life, and I encourage everyone who is thinking about public service to have a go.”
