Big community response for Poowong transport services
More than 760 people have signed a petition calling for improved transport services for Poowong to and from Melbourne and Leongatha/Korumburra.
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien said he will table the petition in Parliament this week after being approached by local publican Fiona Cox about the need for better transport links for Poowong.
“I wrote to the Minister for Transport, Jacinta Allan about this issue and got a very unsatisfactory reply so we decided to progress to direct people power and I’m very impressed at the level of support the idea has in the community.
“We currently have nine coach services a day travelling between Melbourne and Leongatha and at the very least I think Public Transport Victoria (PTV) should be trialling diverting one of those services via Poowong to gauge the level of demand for a service running to Melbourne and Leongatha.
“Fiona and other locals have raised with me the concern that young people and the elderly have few transport options available to them in Poowong so I am happy to investigate providing some sort of service.
“Hopefully this very strong showing from the community in getting so many signatures on a petition will help change the government’s mind.
“Poowong is now getting to be within the commuter belt to Melbourne and there is certainly interest in more public transport in the area.
“It has to be viable, but the response to this petition suggests it might be and at the very least it’s something the Labor Government should be trialling.”
