Wonthaggi funded – now its Korumburra’s turn
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien has again called on the Andrews Labor Government to fund stage 2 of the Korumburra Secondary College rebuild, after news Wonthaggi will finally receive its funding last week.
Mr O’Brien said Korumburra students were now in their new building funded by The Nationals in government in 2014 but the full rebuild needs to now be funded.
“The Nationals in government provided $5.6 million for stage one of the Korumburra rebuild and ahead of the 2014 election we committed a further $9 million to finish the job,” Mr O’Brien said.
“Unfortunately, Labor made no such commitment and has now overlooked Korumburra students in three consecutive state budgets.
“I have tabled petitions from the community supporting the rebuild, I have raised it in Parliament and I have written to the Minister all to no avail.
“With the long overdue funding for Wonthaggi now committed its time Labor finished the job on the other major South Gippsland school project and committed funding for the full rebuild of Korumburra Secondary College.”
The Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Region and Shadow Assistant Minister for Education, Melina Bath said Korumburra is a growing community and needs a modern school.
“More and more people are attracted to the lifestyle of South Gippsland with some even commuting to Melbourne from Korumburra and surrounding areas.
“We need a 21st century secondary college for Korumburra and The Nationals delivered the first stage of that in government,” Ms Bath said.
“It is great to see the students enjoying the new state of the art facilities that stage one has provided but we now need to finish the job.
“I call on Daniel Andrews to fund this important project as soon as possible and ensure that Korumburra students do not miss out.”
