Underground the only option for new transmission link
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien has welcomed news that the proposed new Bass Strait electricity link will be buried underground on the Victorian side.
Mr O’Brien was commenting after the release of the business case assessment for Marinus Link – a second high voltage electricity connector between Tasmania and the mainland.
The business case assessment was released recently and notes the undergrounding of the proposed high voltage cable from power sources in Tasmania under Bass Strait and also through Gippsland to a proposed connection near Hazelwood
“This project has been in development for a little while now and from the early stages I’ve impressed upon the proponent, TasNetworks, that any high voltage cable through Gippsland must go underground.
“I’m pleased to see that is reflected in the business case assessment given the likelihood that the cable will be constructed through the Gippsland South electorate.
“Marinus Link hasn’t yet confirmed its proposed route but given that it aims to connect to the east coast grid at Hazelwood it would likely go through parts of South Gippsland or Wellington Shires.
“Locals will clearly remember the battle over Basslink pylons and do not want a repeat of that situation with a second Bass Strait crossing.
“Gippsland is known for its beautiful rolling green hills from a tourism, food and agricultural perspective and we certainly didn’t want another set of pylons marching across our beautiful landscape.
“I’m pleased Marinus Link understands this and will use today’s technology not yesterday’s to deliver the link if it proceeds.
“I look forward to further engagement with Marinus Link when it confirms a proposed route and will be working to ensure there are minimal disruptions for Gippslanders and positive benefits for local jobs and suppliers.”
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien, is pleased the Marinus Link is proposed to go underground, protecting Gippsland’s beautiful landscape.
