Gippsland South The Nationals Small business

Time for duck season to be confirmed

Gippsland duck hunters and camping and hunting supply businesses should be looking forward to a good duck season in 2016, according to The Nationals Member for Gippsland South Danny O’Brien.

Mr O’Brien called on the Melbourne Labor Government to confirm as soon as possible that the season will go ahead this year to allow hunters and businesses to prepare.

Mr O’Brien said despite dry conditions in the west and north of the state, Gippsland’s wetlands were in good condition and there was no reason for a full season not to proceed.

“Gippsland is a great hunting, fishing and camping location and the duck season brings significant economic benefits to our region.  With other parts of the state being quite dry, Gippsland can expect an influx of hunters this year which will be good for local businesses,” Mr O’Brien said.

“We also have excellent Field and Game Australia branches that do wonderful work in waterfowl preservation and wetland conservation, so our systems are in good ecological shape.

“Labor has prevaricated before in an attempt to appease radical animal activists and the Greens, but it shouldn’t delay any longer in confirming that this year’s season will go ahead.”

Mr O’Brien said even the Game Management Authority stated that: “Victoria’s game ducks are highly resilient to harvesting and have strong powers in response to harvesting and favourable environmental conditions”. It further notes that: “Adaptively regulated duck hunting has been shown not to put at risk the conservation status of game ducks”.

“Recent calls by Federal Labor MP Kelvin Thomson are typical of city MPs trying to tell country communities what they can and can’t do.

“A sustainable, well-regulated duck season is great for Gippsland and there is no reason for it not to go ahead this year. There are signs that the El Niño is on the way out and with good rain in New South Wales and Lake Eyre now filling up, the national picture is only improving as far as our wetlands go.

“Locally of course, Gippsland is in pretty good condition and hunters are looking forward to a good season.

“Labor should end the waiting game and get on with confirming the 2016 season will go ahead.”
