Statement on possible Esso sale
“The announcement by ExxonMobil that is seeking to sell its Gippsland assets will undoubtedly create some uncertainty but it is too early to speculate on what the implications are for this region.
“It is important to remember that it will be business as usual for now and the many questions we all have can’t be answered until, and if, there is a buyer.
“The oil and gas developments in Bass Strait and Longford have undoubtedly been very good for Sale and Gippsland for the past 50 years, providing excellent, well-paid jobs and supporting many businesses.
“The reality is though that these fields won’t keep producing forever and we need to work harder to continue to grow our already diversified local economy.
“Given the prospective uncertainty over the next few years, it is even more incumbent now on the Andrews Labor Government to invest in our region by funding projects such as the Macalister Irrigation District phase 2 upgrade, the Princes Highway duplication to Sale and improvement train services to our region.”
