Statement from Danny O’Brien re: Murray Goulburn job losses
“The loss of 52 jobs in Leongatha, five in Maffra and others elsewhere is devastating for those who will now be out of work. My thoughts are with them and their families.
“The Leongatha job cuts will be a hit to the town and the South Gippsland economy.
“Given the loss of milk that Murray Goulburn has sustained over the past 12 months or so, the production changes are perhaps no surprise but that doesn’t make it any easier for those impacted.
“It is very disappointing that so many jobs will be lost. These workers are paying the price for some very bad decisions by the previous Murray Goulburn management in the past couple of years.
“While my thoughts are with those who will be taking redundancies we should not forget that the milk hasn’t disappeared, it has gone to other manufacturers and hopefully they will be able to take up some of the slack.
“I remain optimistic about the future of the dairy industry and hopefully these jobs will one day return.
“Although the loss of the Co-op is a bitter blow for many dairy farmers and now these workers, the positive mood around the bid by Saputo is cause for optimism. Hopefully Saputo will be able to build Murray Goulburn back up to the powerhouse it once was.”
