Shire and community get on board sale college campaign

The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien has welcomed growing community support for the campaign to consolidate Sale College on to one campus.

Mr O’Brien was commenting after a motion was passed by Wellington Shire which supports the proposal to create one campus and resolved to write to the Minister for Education supporting the proposal.

“I began a campaign more than two years ago talking to the local community about support for a single campus,” Mr O’Brien said.

“Last year I wrote to the Education Minister seeking funding for a masterplan to outline a future for the two campuses and whether they should be located on a new greenfield site or a redeveloped Guthridge Parade campus.

“So far the Andrews Labor Government has shown little interest in the redevelopment of Sale College but with support from the Shire and the broader Sale community I believe we are gaining momentum.

“I also welcome the support of the Committee for Wellington which has established a sub-committee to push for the redevelopment.”

Mr O’Brien said there was a good opportunity for the state to commit to at least funding a masterplan given its COVID-19 stimulus package had cleared the decks of a number of other education capital projects around the state that that would otherwise have had priority over Sale.

“I’m not asking at this stage for many millions of dollars for construction – we just need to get a plan in place and agreement on the location of a redeveloped school.

“The school community sees multiple problems with having two campuses and relocating from the Macalister campus would free up an important site in the centre of Sale’s CBD.

“I will continue to work with the Shire, Sale College and the wider community to get this project underway.

“The successful funding this week of the Princes Highway duplication shows that we can deliver for Gippsland no matter who is in government in Spring Street and I look forward to success for the students of Sale and district.”
