Princes Highway petition launched
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien has launched a petition calling on the Andrews Labor Government to fund the final two stages of the Princes Highway duplication project between Traralgon and Sale.
The Federal Member for Gippsland, Darren Chester secured $132 million in the Commonwealth budget, however Daniel Andrews failed to include the remaining $33 million state contribution in his May budget.
“This duplication project is creating a safer road for our community and visitors and will help improve local freight efficiency and make Central Gippsland a more attractive place to live and invest.
“The fact that the remaining stages were not included in the budget speaks volumes of the attitude Daniel Andrews has towards Gippsland.
“This project has had bipartisan support for many years and I am astounded by the failure of the Andrews Government to continue that approach. Sale and East Gippsland residents have put up with nearly 10 years of roadworks already and this failure by labor will prolong that even further.
When questioned in the recent Public Accounts and Estimates Committee hearings the Andrews Labor Government said it was caught by surprise that the Federal Government’s budget included funding for the road.
“For the Andrews Government to be caught by ‘surprise’ that this project needed completing is alarming,” said Mr O’Brien.
“The duplication between Traralgon and Sale has been going for nearly 10 years now, given the last two sections are unfunded and work will finish on currently funded sections this time next year, it shouldn’t be a ‘surprise’ to the government that there was a need to fund it this year.
“By signing the petition, local residents can put pressure back on the government to find the funding for this important project.”
The petition is available for signing at Mr O’Brien’s office at 54B Cunninghame Street, Sale and at various local businesses.
