One highlight and a lot of disappointment in Budget
Road conditions will deteriorate further in Gippsland South due to State Budget cuts revealed today while significant projects in the region have missed out on funding from the Melbourne Labor Government.
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South Danny O’Brien said there was one positive in the budget with confirmation of funding to complete the new Sale Specialist School but otherwise it was a disappointment and confirmation Labor cares little for Gippsland.
“The Nationals started the process for a new Specialist School and I have strongly welcomed the funding to complete it. Elsewhere though the budget is very disappointing, in particular the cuts to road funding that will condemn our local roads to further deterioration - more potholes, more damage and reduced safety for local motorists.
"Labor has not only axed the successful Country Roads and Bridges program in this Budget, it has also slashed VicRoads funding by 10 per cent (Budget paper 3, p. 123). By contrast, The Nationals in Government increased the VicRoads budget by $130 million in last year's Budget to more than $500 million and we have seen the results of that in works over the summer period. There is much more to be done and unfortunately it won't be done under Labor because of the cuts in this Budget.
"Labor has also turned its back on funding for the Korumburra and Leongatha Secondary Colleges. Korumburra received funds for an upgrade from The Nationals last year and we committed to a full rebuild prior to the election. Labor has ignored the need for this rebuild and delivered nothing for this school, nor the additional $1.5 million we pledged to finish Leongatha Secondary College. I will continue to advocate for these projects to deliver better facilities for our children and their teachers.
"Labor has also failed to contribute to the important Macalister Irrigation District upgrade, MID 2030, which would deliver water savings and create a more productive district, boosting the local economy and creating jobs. It is also very disappointing the Government has failed to provide funding to South Gippsland Water for the Northern Towns Water project which would improve water security for Korumburra, Poowong, Loch and Nyora."
Mr O'Brien said other projects to miss out include the Toora boat ramp dredging and a pedestrian bridge over Bruthen Creek at Woodside.
"This proves that Melbourne Labor has little care for Gippsland and country Victoria. Overall it has slashed budgets for agriculture, regional development and roads to funnel cash to Melbourne.”
