O’Brien seeks answers on dedicated rail line
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien, has quizzed the Andrews Labor Government on what it’s doing to improve train service performance on the Gippsland Line.
In State Parliament last week Mr O’Brien questioned the Minister for Transport, Jacinta Allan, on what the government is doing to plan a dedicated line for Gippsland trains between Pakenham and Southern Cross Station.
“Gippsland line trains are regularly halted or slowed down dramatically once they hit Pakenham due to stopping-all-stations Metro Services causing major delays for Gippsland passengers.
“The Regional Rail Project gave dedicated access to Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo lines, but completely ignored Gippsland which means the delays caused by Metro continue.
“The Gippsland Line is one of the worst performing in terms of punctuality and the congestion in the metropolitan area is the main reason for this problem.
“I am also conscious of community interest in returning rail to Leongatha as well. While I don’t believe that is viable at the moment, it cannot proceed at all unless there are more slots available on the Cranbourne-Pakenham line.
“With rapid growth continuing throughout the south-eastern suburbs of Cranbourne and Clyde, and the prospect of a new commercial airport at Koo Wee Rup, we must plan for the future.
“The government’s Sky Rail Project significantly hinders any proposal for a dedicated Gippsland line so its time Labor explained what it will do to help Gippsland services.”
Mr O’Brien has been campaigning for better train services to Sale and Wellington Shire since elected and is conscious of concerns about coach services in South Gippsland as well.
“More and more people are relying on public transport and some parts of my electorate such as Nyora, Poowong, Loch and even Korumburra are becoming an extended part of the commuter belt.
“We need to plan for the future to ensure we have the train services that Gippsland needs.”
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien, wants answers on a dedicated Gippsland rail line that could help with future services to South Gippsland as well.
