New Shadow Water Minister visits irrigation district

The Nationals’ Deputy Leader and new Shadow Minister for Water, Steph Ryan visited the Macalister Irrigation District (MID) last week.

Ms Ryan was there at the invitation of local Nationals MPs Danny O’Brien, Member for Gippsland South and Tim Bull, Member for Gippsland East along with Member for Eastern Victoria, Melina Bath.

Ms Ryan received a briefing from Southern Rural Water Managing Director, Clinton Rodda and also met with members of the Macalister Irrigation District Customer Consultative Committee.

“I’ve had a lot to do with the MID in my previous roles but it was great to come as the new Shadow Minister for Water to get a full briefing on the issues affecting the organisation and farmers in the MID,” Ms Ryan said.

“There are some exciting projects modernising the MID to ensure that it keeps pace with modern technology and will support our farmers for decades to come.”

Mr Bull said the MID was a critical driver of economic activity in the Wellington Shire and was important to towns such as Maffra, Heyfield and Stratford.

“It’s great to have Steph come down to see and hear first-hand what is happening and to ensure that she is well abreast of any developments and the needs of the local irrigation district,” Mr Bull said.

Mr O’Brien said there is a strong future for irrigation in the region.

“The Nationals have strongly supported the MID 2030 project in the past, delivering $16 million when in government for Stage 1A and lobbying hard for state and federal funding including from our colleague Member for Gippsland, Darren Chester, for Stage 1B,” Mr O’Brien said.

“It’s important our irrigation district is modernised to ensure its productivity and that it continues to meet the needs of our farmers. It’s that productivity that delivers jobs in our region and gives us a strong sustainable future.”
