The Nationals Member for Gippsland South Danny O’Brien caught up with Jenelle Wilkes and April Nolan, the organisers of the Mother’s Day Classic, ahead of this Sunday’s event.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland South Danny O’Brien is encouraging individuals, families, children and grandparents to get involved with this Sunday’s Mother’s Day Classic in Sale.

Mr O’Brien said the second annual Sale Mother’s Day Classic was a great chance for children to spend time with their mothers while raising funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

“The event provides a great opportunity for Sale residents to get out and do a lap around Lake Guthridge and raise funds for the breast cancer research, prevention and treatment,” Mr O’Brien said.

“Every day people in our community are affected by breast cancer and this year alone 15,600 women are predicted to be diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia.

“By participating in this weekend’s event we can all play our part in supporting women faced with this scary diagnosis.”

Mr O’Brien will participate in the four kilometre event, however encouraged the keen runners to sign up for the eight kilometre run.

“I encourage as many locals as possible to join me in participating in the event as a way of showing community support for those affected by breast cancer,” Mr O’Brien said.

Jenelle Wilkes, one of the event’s organisers, said the inaugural Mother’s Day Classic last year raised close to $17,000.

“With online entries open until Wednesday, we’re encouraging people to get on and pre-register to enable us to best cater for the right number of people,” Ms Wilkes said.

“We’re also accepting team entries this year and we’re hoping that local businesses will encourage their employees to don their work shirts and sign up as a team.”

People wanting to pre-register should visit www.mothersdayclassic.com.au. Entries will be accepted on the day from 8am at the LEAF in the Sale Botanic Gardens.
