Groups encouraged to apply for Men’s Shed grants
Grants of up to $60,000 are now available to help communities build new Men’s Sheds or $30,000 to redevelop and modify existing Sheds, The Nationals Member for Gippsland South Danny O’Brien said today.
Mr O’Brien said Men’s Sheds play a very important role in local communities and give men an opportunity to catch up with others, develop or utilize their trade skills, chat about things affecting their life and undertake community projects.
“Men’s Sheds are one of the most powerful tools we have in helping men to remain valued and valuable members of our community and I encourage local community groups to apply for the latest round of grants,” Mr O’Brien said.
“Many older men have learned from our culture that they don’t talk about feelings and emotions, but Men’s Sheds are helping to break down those barriers and providing men with a supportive environment to have those discussions.
“In addition, men are often more prone than women to suffer from isolation, loneliness and depression and Men’s Sheds give men the chance to get out of the house and spend some time with other blokes.”
Mr O’Brien said becoming a member of a Men’s Shed provided men with a safe and busy environment where they can connect with friends and maintain an active body and active mind in an atmosphere of old-fashioned mateship.
“Funding is available to community groups and local councils and priority will be given to projects from vulnerable communities, especially those affected by fire or drought,” Mr O’Brien said
Mr O’Brien said applications for grants closed on 27 May 2016 and more information was available here.
