Gippsland finally wins Princes Highway funding fight

The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien says today’s funding for the final two stages for the Princes Highway duplication is a massive win for the people of Wellington Shire and Gippsland.

Mr O’Brien, who has been campaigning for the funding since being elected in 2015, said the joint state-federal contribution was vindication of the needs of the Gippsland community.

“It has been extremely frustrating for all of these years to see the Andrews Labor Government spend billions of dollars on Melbourne projects, but consistently overlook the final two stages of the Princes Highway duplication between Traralgon and Sale,” Mr O’Brien said.

“Even when my federal colleague, Darren Chester delivered $132 million in the previous two Federal Budgets, Daniel Andrews and Jacinta Allan were unmoved.

“I have raised this matter 38 times in State Parliament, have tabled hundreds of petitions and written to Ministers numerous times and I’m delighted that today we have finally had a victory.

“The Federal Government will contribute $202 million and the State Government $50 million to complete the two remaining stages at Flynn and Kilmany, including the Kilmany overpass.

“Construction will create 185 direct and indirect jobs and the State Government projects it to be completed in 2024.

“It’s not lost on me that this project would be close to completion now had the state government continued funding it when the earlier stages were being completed and that we now have an $85 million blowout on what the project was predicted to cost just three years ago. That is for Daniel Andrews and Jacinta Allan to explain.

“I am simply pleased that we are finally getting this project, that has dragged on for more than ten years now, completed.

“Great credit to my federal colleague, Darren Chester and the Federal Government for sticking by Gippslanders and putting in their funding and ultimately dragging the State Labor Government to also contributing and ensuring this project goes ahead.”

Mr O’Brien said he will continue to fight for better roads funding throughout the region as the Princes Highway was the highest profile, but just one of many areas that need improvement.
