Fire safety under the spotlight in Carrajung
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien, is working with the Carrajung community to try to address bushfire safety concerns in and around the township.
Mr O’Brien recently met with Carrajung CFA Captain Graeme Hurrell to examine potential bushfire threats around town. These include vegetated areas north of the Grand Ridge Road and a particular wedge of land at the intersection of Grand Ridge Road and O’Connor Street.
“This area of bush is immediately adjacent to the township and is very heavily overgrown with lots of vegetation and leaf matter built up on the ground.
“I can certainly see in principle it may be a fire risk and am now working with the fire brigade to identify who is responsible for the land.
“Once we have done that I’ll be working with the relevant authority to see if we can have some of the fire hazard removed and ensure that Carrajung is made a safer place from bushfire risk.
“I know the Strzelecki Ranges were scarred by the 2009 bushfires and we need to do what we can to ensure risk is minimized in future.”
