Disrespect for CFA volunteers continues under Labor
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien has condemned Daniel Andrews for his latest attempt to silence CFA volunteers through cuts to funding for FIRE WISE, an important communication tool for volunteers.
Funding for the publication which began in 1947 as The Fireman was cut last week in yet another move by the Andrews Labor Government to gag CFA volunteers.
Mr O’Brien said the cut was announced just one week after the publication reported on the need for the Royal Commission into Victoria’s fire services, announced by The Nationals and Liberals.
“Fire Wise is used by Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV), the CFA Chief, EMV Commissioner Craig Lapsley and local volunteers to communicate messages on issues which affect volunteers,” Mr O’Brien said.
“This includes information on service delivery, volunteer awards and coming fire services events and I fear that if the publication is reduced to an online presence, it will miss hundreds of volunteers across our region who rely on the hard copy.
“Daniel Andrews has hit a new low in his war against volunteers by trying to silence them through taking away a major communication tool”, Mr O’Brien said.
“A Liberal Nationals Government will ensure funding is reinstated to ensure all fire fighters including volunteers continue to have a voice on their fire services.
“This latest funding cut is just further proof of Daniel Andrews disrespect for volunteers as he works to destroy the CFA.”
Mr O’Brien said Opposition Leader Matthew Guy and Leader of The Nationals Peter Walsh recently announced a plan for a Royal Commission into Victoria’s fire services to restore the confidence of local communities and volunteers in the CFA.
“The pledge for a Royal Commission is about ensuring we protect those who protect us,” Mr O’Brien said.
“There is serious concern among our communities that Daniel Andrews has damaged Victoria’s fire services.
“A Royal Commission will be able to critically examine the issues our fire services are facing and come up with evidence based solutions.”
