The Nationals Roads Gippsland South Funding Election promise

Council road projects to get the nod under Nats

A number of South Gippsland Shire roads would be sealed and bridges replaced if The Nationals win government at next weekend’s state election.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien said the Liberals and Nationals would reintroduce the $160 million Country Roads and Bridges Program which will give $1 million per annum to South Gippsland Shire.

“This important program was axed by Daniel Andrews on coming to government at the same time that he wasted $1.3 billion not to build the East/West Link road.

“We are determined to bring the Country Roads and Bridges Program back to fix local roads and bridges, take pressure off council budgets and reduce the burden on rate payers.

“In South Gippsland, roads such as Clancys Road in Korumburra, Walkerville South Road and Lesters Road in Yanakie would likely be sealed under the program. There would also be bridge replacements on Bass Valley Road and at Foster.”

Mr O’Brien said roads was probably the number one issue that people in South Gippsland raised with him and the Country Roads and Bridges Program will make a significant difference to council roads in the region.

“We are a high rainfall area and with milk tankers, log trucks and other heavy vehicles not to mention tourists and caravans, our roads take a beating.

“The Nationals understand this and that Councils can’t do all the work on their own which is why we introduced this program in the first place.

“This is about helping get you home safer and with less damage to your vehicle, while also reducing pressure on your council rates.”

Mr O’Brien said the Country Roads and Bridges Program was in addition to the $1 billion Road Fix Blitz, which would help fix state highways such as the South Gippsland, Strzelecki and Hyland Highways.

“There’s lots of work to do after Daniel Andrews axed the Country Roads and Bridges Program and cut VicRoads’ budget in his first two budgets, but The Nationals are determined to make our country roads better.”
