Community views sought on Sale College consolidation
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien is seeking the views of the Sale community on the possible consolidation of Sale College onto one site.
Mr O’Brien said the college community was eager to move to one site, most likely a consolidation onto the Guthridge campus or potentially a new greenfield site.
“I’ve been having discussions with college principal Brendan Staple and staff recently and they have made clear to me they would much prefer to have all students on one campus, for educational and staff retention reasons.
“I believe there is plenty of room for that to occur at the Guthridge campus in future but we need to have a very open community discussion about the idea before progressing it any further.
“Obviously closing the Macalister Street campus would have an impact on the CBD both positive and negative, and that’s why I want to hear the views of businesses, community members, students and parents.
“The last thing we want to see is a vacant eyesore in the middle of town but I’m sure there are good potential uses that the Macalister Street site could be put to if a consolidation did go ahead.
“That’s why I want to hear from the community before we progress the idea any further.”
Mr O’Brien has written to Wellington Shire, the Sale Business and Tourism Association and the Committee for Wellington to seek their views and is inviting members of the community to also have their say.
“The school has been managing on two campuses for over two decades now but it believes it’s not the best educational model for our students.
“Moving to a new campus or consolidation is likely to take some time but we need to begin planning for it and hearing from the community.
“Let’s get all the views and issues out on the table and have a discussion so we can go to government with a clear idea of what the Sale community would like to see.”
Mr O’Brien said anyone who wanted to share their views on this matter could contact him on 5144 1987 or email@example.com
