Campus saga drags into another year
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien has again called on the State Government to provide the Sale community with clarity about the future of Federation Training’s Fulham campus.
Mr O’Brien said as 2018 gets underway the Wellington Shire community is still in the dark on what the Andrews Labor Governments plan is for training in the region.
“On the 4th July last year the Gippsland Times carried a story quoting Federation Training saying that an announcement on the TAFE’s future at Fulham will be made “within weeks”.
“Here we are more than six months down the track and we’re still no closer to any clarity from the Andrews Labor Government on this vital issue for our region.
“I’m proud that The Nationals have committed to build a new campus on the Port of Sale site but we need Labor to come to the party and deliver funding for a new campus now or in the State Budget this year.”
Mr O’Brien said the clearing of the former netball court buildings at the Port of Sale before Christmas had raised hopes locally.
“I’ve had people contact me hopeful that this is a sign that a new campus is about to be built but alas we’ve heard nothing from the government or Federation Training. The Fulham campus is too far out of town and is falling apart and the community has waited far too long for this decision.
“When in government The Nationals provided $1.5 million for design and development of a new campus but nothing has progressed since.
“Daniel Andrews talked a big game in Opposition about TAFE but so far he’s failed dismally particularly in Gippsland where student enrolments have fallen dramatically. Across the state there are now 120,000 less students in training than there were when The Nationals were in government.”
Mr O’Brien said he would continue to campaign for the new campus and encouraged local residents to sign a petition circulating in local businesses or at his office to support a new campus.
