Gippsland South The Nationals Gippsland Wellington Shire Funding bushfire recovery Bushfire recovery fund

Bushfire funding needed for all Gippsland events

Locals are being encouraged to apply for funding to support regional tourism events and attract more people into the Wellington Shire, but there are calls for the program to be extended to all of Gippsland.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien said a dedicated Bushfire Recovery Round of the Regional Events Fund would soon be available in Wellington Shire to provide grants up to $20,000 to help organisers attract more people to events.

The total funding of $300,000 would only be available to the 15 local government areas most affected by bushfire, which includes Wellington Shire.

Mr O’Brien said tourism in South Gippsland Shire and other parts of Gippsland had also been affected by the bushfires and these areas should also be eligible for event funding.

“I was concerned that other parts of Gippsland were not included so I raised this matter personally with the Minister for Tourism this week in State Parliament.

“He has assured me there will be forthcoming rounds of the program that other areas will be able to apply for.  That is pleasing because in South Gippsland we have some great festivals and events that deserve more government support to bring people to our region.

“They include the forthcoming Mirboo North Italian Festa and the Meeniyan Garlic Festival which will bring thousands of visitors to our region.”

Visit Victoria will manage the program and applications will open later this month. Applications will require the support of either a local council or regional tourism board.

“Any event that brings more people into our community helps to support local shops and local jobs,” Mr O’Brien said.

“I encourage local groups to capitalise on this opportunity and consider how additional funding can help to bring more visitors into our region.”
